Who We Are
Viz provides solutions for decision support, visual analytics, collaboration, and big data management using human-centered design.
We believe that great solutions require great design and great engineering. We employ an interdisciplinary and iterative approach that focuses on understanding and meeting human needs—the essence of human-centered design.
When we work with customers, our interdisciplinary teams make frequent, rapid prototypes and foster deep engagement with users. Our interactions are based on the knowledge that both business and technical requirements change throughout the development and roll-out of new solutions.
We don't limit this process to the development stage; we use it throughout the lifecycle to ensure continual development of usable, feasible, and valuable solutions.
Founded in 1998 by Carnegie Mellon University researchers, Viz's groundbreaking research in decision support software for DARPA's Command Post of the Future program revolutionized military command-and-control. We have since applied our expertise in collaboration, visual analytics, and decision support to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, exploring new ways to support situational awareness during drug discovery and clinical trials. Our work has also expanded to include solutions for complex problems in the energy, emergency management, cyber security, and supply chain management industries. Viz was acquired by General Dynamics C4 Systems in 2005. In 2015, General Dynamics C4 Systems and General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems combined to form General Dynamics Mission Systems.
Do you like knowing that your work has life-saving value? Do you like the squeak of dry-erase markers on a giant whiteboard, or a lively debate about a user’s optimal experience, or the view of the South Side slopes, or the autonomy to accomplish your goals as you see fit, or board game lunches? Do you like the kind of day where you learn so many new skills that your brain feels like it just ate Thanksgiving dinner? Sound intriguing? Viz is looking for people like you: smart, creative, and fun.
We make software that interactively visualizes data. We make software that enables massive collaboration. We make software that supports our men and women in the military, that smoothes the way of emergency responders here at home, that offers insight to researchers and data analysts. We’re a passionate, close-knit group of inter-disciplinary thinkers and doers that craft truly one-of-a-kind software used all over the world, and we do it from our cozy-casual office here in Pittsburgh.
Our reputation for state-of-the-art solutions is a direct result of the innovative thinking by our people.

- "Viz has provided a great environment for me to hone my skills, learn from incredibly smart people, and advance within the company. The culture encourages cross-discipline interaction and gets everyone involved from requirements and design all the way through development, testing, and maintenance. The problems we solve are deeply technical, challenging, and fun. As an added bonus, it is rewarding to know the products I help create are used and make a difference. Overall, Viz is an amazing place to work, and I couldn’t have asked for a better environment to build my career."
